In this Jubilee Year of St Francis of Assisi, let us be humble peacemakers, carers of creation and in solidarity with those made poor.

In 1986, St John Paul II established the International Meeting for Peace in Assisi as an interreligious prayer service for peace during the Cold War. On October 25th, in the spirit of St Francis, Pope Leo XV addressed those gathered at Assisi for the 40th Anniversary of the International Meeting for Peace, saying: “There is no such thing as a holy war....Only peace is holy… War can never be waged in the name of God….Precisely in these times marked by a ‘culture of power’, there is a need to cultivate the spirit of Assisi, which entails a rejection of the religious justification of war.”

The FFCP Social Justice Group encourages people to read Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter, “Fratelli Tutti” and Pope Leo’s encyclical letter, “Magnifica Humanitas”. Copies can be purchased from www.paulinebooks.com.au/ which are based in Castlereagh St, Sydney.
