from Fr Satheesh
Dear Parishioners,
This weekend we celebrate the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. This week’s Gospel marks a quiet but decisive turning point in Jesus’ ministry. In the wake of John the Baptist’s arrest, Jesus does not retreat or remain in the familiar safety of Nazareth. Instead, he moves to Capernaum, a border town, a crossroads, a place shaped by diversity, hardship, and uncertainty. It is there, on the margins, that the light of God’s promise begins to shine.
Matthew reminds us that this move fulfils Isaiah’s prophecy: those who lived in darkness have seen a great light. Jesus’ presence brings hope where people felt forgotten and overlooked. God’s saving work does not begin in centres of power or comfort, but among ordinary people longing for meaning and renewal.
Jesus’ first words of preaching are simple yet challenging: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” Repentance is not about fear or guilt, but about turning our hearts toward the light that has already dawned. It is an invitation to change direction, to let go of what keeps us in darkness, and to trust that God is near.
This Gospel invites us to ask: where do we experience darkness in our own lives or in our world? And are we willing to recognise the light Christ brings, often in unexpected places and allow it to transform us? Like the people of Galilee, we are called to step into that light and begin anew.
As we celebrate Australia Day, we honour the beautiful land we are blessed to inhabit. We thank God for this country and pray for wisdom and strength for all who lead and serve our community. Also, for peace and harmony.
We welcome everyone back from holiday. A special welcome to all our school staff and students as they begin the new school year. As a parish family, we look forward to a wonderful year ahead, filled with faith and love. This new year brings us hope. I encourage you to partake in all the spiritual and social activities taking place in our beautiful Parish family. Please don’t hesitate to contact the parish office if you need anything, we are here to support and assist you in any way we can.
May God Bless you all
