GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF THE HOST & THE CHALICE.
RECEIVING ON THE HAND
If you choose to receive on the tongue please:
RECEIVING FROM THE CHALICE
If you choose to receive from the chalice, approach the minister with the chalice.
N.B. A person may come forward in the Communion procession with arms folded across their chest to indicate their desire to receive a blessing, rather than receiving Communion.
- As you approach the priest or minister bow in reverence.
- Hold out both hands, palms up, one hand under the other.
- Hold your hands still and steady, not open fingers or from a distance. Most importantly, do not take or grab the host from the minister.
- When the minister says “Body of Christ” respond with a spoken “Amen”
- After receiving the host, step to one side and consume the whole host immediately and with devotion.
If you choose to receive on the tongue please:
- open your mouth fully
- tilt your head back slightly
- extend your tongue beyond your lips.
RECEIVING FROM THE CHALICE
If you choose to receive from the chalice, approach the minister with the chalice.
- When the minister says “The Blood of Christ” respond “Amen”.
- Take the chalice with both hands, drink a small amount and return it carefully to the minister.
- It is not permitted to self-intinct, that is, to dip the host into the chalice yourself.
